He will sit like a refiner of silver, burning away the dross. He will purify the Levites, refining them like gold and silver, so that they may once again offer acceptable sacrifices to the LORD.
Malachi 3:3 (NLT)

There was a group of women who were having a Bible study regarding the book Malachi. The third chapter was particularly interesting to them because it likened people to silver. The fact that a silversmith would put silver in the fire to take the impurities was an analogy of how God sometimes puts us through the fire in order to purify us. The amount of heat in the purification process is very important because if it gets too hot, the silver is destroyed.
At the right temperature, the dross or impurities rise to the surface and the end result is the silversmith being able to see his own reflection in the silver created.
God is in every detail of our lives and watches over us closely, just as a silversmith watches over his creation. God purifies us until He can see His own image reflected through us.
Our prayer is that we will trust God to purify and refine us so that we reflect Him to others in everything we do.
“He came to deliver us from our sinful dispositions, and create in us pure hearts, and when we have Him with us it will not be hard for us. Then the service of Christ will be delightful.”
- Dwight L. Moody
