Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?
(James 2:21-22 NKJV)
Faith alone is not sufficient. Faith that does not show itself by good deeds is no faith at all. Although Abraham was justified by faith alone, his faith did not remain alone and isolated. True faith is always accompanied by its twin, works.
By offering Isaac on the altar, Abraham proved his real faith through his works, and he was perfected (or matured) in his faith. When we look for ways to act out our faith with good works, our faith grows and becomes more mature and deeper.
Faith without works is not faith at all, but a simple lack of obedience to God.
